Poland is set to significantly increase its import cap on medical cannabis due to the steady increase in demand in what is becoming one of Europe's most exciting markets.

According to new documents seen by Business of Cannabi s , Poland’s Główny Inspektor Farmaceutyczny (Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate or GIF) says that the estimated annual demand for medical cannabis in Poland has nearly doubled. As Poland, which legalized medical cannabis in 2017 , relies on imports to supply its booming medical cannabis market, the cap on import limits is expected to be raised by more than five tons.

Despite this, about half of the country's import permits remain unfilled, forcing companies able to increase their supply levels to wait months, creating major bottlenecks in overall supply.

What happened

In a response to a public information request submitted on September 20, 2024, the GIF stated that the estimated annual demand for cannabis in 2024 had been revised, increasing by 5,278,431 grams.

This means that the total amount of medical cannabis allowed to be imported into Poland this year has increased from the initial 6 tonnes to just over 11 tonnes. Medical cannabis companies have therefore already been rushing to obtain larger import permits to meet demand.
