Poland could move forward with decriminalizing cannabis use through a proposal that would allow possession of up to 15 grams and cultivation of a plant for personal use. The measure, presented by MPs to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, is awaiting an official response and is fueling debate on a fairer and more modern drug policy in the country.

Last week, a group of Polish MPs submitted a proposal to Prime Minister Donald Tusk to decriminalise cannabis. The initiative would make possession of up to 15 grams of cannabis for personal use and cultivation of a plant a crime in Poland. Drafted by the Parliamentary Committee on Petitions, the measure was presented in the form of a ‘dezyderat’, a formal petition asking the government to consider the issue, but which has no legal force. It is a political instrument that allows a parliamentary body to express a request or recommendation to the government, highlighting the need for action on a relevant issue. Although it does not legally bind the government, this form of lobbying can influence political and social decisions.
