Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party, is now strongly advocating for an experiment in the legalisation of cannabis in France.
As France faces an increase in drug-related crime, particularly in cities like Marseille, many are wondering whether legalizing cannabis could be a viable solution to curb this growing problem enabled by the prohibition of drugs in general and cannabis in particular.
A failing system
Speaking on RMC and BMFTV, Olivier Faure expressed his frustration with the current approach to combating drug trafficking in France. According to him, the country is facing a growing crisis, with France still a major consumer of illegal drugs and trafficking spreading to small and medium-sized towns.
In Marseille, for example, families are being forced to flee drug traffickers, while hitmen, often recruited from prisons, are increasingly young. Faure insisted that "a whole system is in place and it must be broken."
Despite its very strict anti-drug policy, France is paradoxically one of the biggest consumers of cannabis in Europe . Olivier Faure highlighted this contradiction, suggesting that current laws are failing to reduce either consumption or trafficking. Indeed, according to him, drug consumption is lower in countries where cannabis has been legalized. For Faure, this calls into question the effectiveness of the prohibitionist approach that has been in place for decades .
