Moldova has decided to approve the cultivation of hemp for food and fiber production, Hemp Today reports . The move is seen as an opportunity to modernize agriculture, boost the economy and promote sustainability.
A Clearer Path for Industrial Hemp
The Moldovan government has amended regulations to allow the cultivation of hemp varieties listed in the Moldovan National Catalogue of Plant Varieties , the EU Common Catalogue of Agricultural Plant Species and the catalogues of EU Member States . These amendments simplify the licensing process under the supervision of the country's Food Safety Agency and Ministry of Agriculture , providing clarity for farmers and businesses.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean highlighted the economic potential of this initiative, saying: “These materials are used in many industries, including the automotive industry. This is a very good opportunity for the business environment of the Republic of Moldova.”
Hemp flowers will not be allowed to be used for the time being. The production of CBD and other cannabinoids is hampered by Moldovan drug laws and strict requirements of the Permanent Committee on Drug Control. Stakeholders are calling for further legal clarification and streamlining of processes to unlock the economic potential of these higher value-added products.
